There’s been a flurry of excitement over the last 24 hours after news that Google GOOG +0.32% and Apple AAPL +0.68% were both planning a games’ console. The story first appeared in the Wall St Journal, whose reporters spoke to people inside Google. The Journal does not make clear what type of device Apple and Google plan, but it does suggest that Google’s is related to the next Android release, which is aimed at supporting lower cost Android smartphones for developing markets. So chances are it’s a mobile device.
Now, that makes perfect sense. Games are essential for handset sales in countries like China, which also happens to be Apple’s major growth market. As mobile platforms look to draw people in further down the price range, gaming becomes an essential part of the product mix.
But it is not so straightforward because the WSJ is suggesting the Google and Apple devices could also be living room products like Ouya’s.
The people briefed on the matter said Google is reacting in part to expectations that rival Apple will launch a videogame console as part of its next Apple TV product release.
The company’s hardware efforts come as it wraps up development on the next version of Android, which is expected to be released in the fall. Among other things, the software will be better tailored to the lower-cost smartphones prevalent in developing countries with the aim of firming up Android’s market-share globally, said some of the people familiar with the matter.

Samsung's New Big Reveal.... Will It Help The S4? Haydn Shaughnessy Haydn Shaughnessy Contributor
But we’ve been here before. And recently. Think back to the Samsung Galaxy S4 unveil in March. Along with the S4 came…. a games controller that can double up as a console. The controller is an adaptable one that can take a range of Samsung devices up to 6.3 inches in length (see picture above).
At the time Digital Trends described it as “an Xbox-like games controller which connects to the phone using NFC and Bluetooth…. Along with connecting to the phone, it also hooks up to Samsung’s official dock, which in turn can be connected by HDMI to your television. In other words, it has got everything to turn the Galaxy S4 into a fully fledged Android console.”
Samsung also announced a small range of games developers including EA were on board with new titles. EA said:
We’re delighted to be partnered with Samsung to bring some of our fans’ favorite mobile gaming titles to the Samsung Galaxy S4 in time for launch. The device’s higher resolution, larger screen and increased processing power will give our games an opportunity to look even more beautiful for Samsung consumers.
Here on Forbes at the time of the S4 launch, John Gaudiosi reflected on the potential for the S4 to take on the major consoles like the PS4:
With the advances in processing power in these mobile devices (and Moore’s Law), mobile devices – and the games being developed for them – are quickly catching up with what current generation consoles can do.
The problem at the time was price – $113 for pre-order, dearer that Ouya. Samsung has yet to launch the Game Pad. It is due this summer. In the last week, Apple announced support for third party game consoles in its new OS releases and now we know of Google’s plans. But the trend begins with Samsung.
If Apple and Google are reacting to anything it is to whatever market opportunity Samsung is also reacting to. And that opportunity is predominantly in South East Asia, right now, where games are not a nice-to-have but an essential part of selling a handset.
Even without the Game Pad, Samsung relies on game-strategy to boost its handset sales in China, where the company operates a successful games-centric App store. Ultra-low cost games are an essential component of handset strategy in China. There, competitor Lenovo is about to launch a new Game World social networking site in response to Samsung’s Chinese language game site. The websites are social sites that show leaderboards and facilitate competition, and are an essential service for handset makers to offer potential customers.
There is in fact a burgeoning market for low cost game consoles in the recently developed world – India, China, Latin America and the Middle East. Options include Woxi Media (Android), Amkette’s Evo TV, and UK-based Gamestick (Android). But see also Game Pop aimed at markets to the west.
The console wars we’ve all been focused on in the past few weeks is no doubt important but the one on mobile is too. It already arrived. It also makes sense that the main players in mobile are putting momentum into games now – smartphone sales are slowing and handset makers need to draw in new users. China is Apple’s biggest growth market. But in China people are not inclined to pay high prices for game. So in a sense, core gamer culture is already being disrupted by mobile there and is now being translated into initiatives and products with visibility here. Samsung though looks ahead of the game.

Paypal and SETI are working on space currency
ONLINE PAYMENT FIRM Paypal is working with the SETI Institute on currency that can be used for space commerce.
Who knows what is wrong with real money for commerce? As far as we know people are not trading in space, and no one has ever asked for change for a Martian dollar. Paypal and SETI are hoping to solve this problem before it appears with the launch of Paypal Galactic.
"As space tourism programs are opening space travel to 'the rest of us' this drives questions about the commercialization of space. We are launching Paypal Galactic, in conjunction with leaders in the scientific community, to increase public awareness of the important questions that need to be addressed," said Paypal president David Marcus.
"We may not answer these questions today or even this year, but one thing is clear, we won't be using cash in space. Paypal has already pushed payments into the internet, onto phones and across terrestrial borders. We look forward to pushing payments from our world to the next, and beyond."
Someone who might know something about inter-terrestrial spending is Buzz Aldrin, because if anyone has been close to a papershop in space it's him.
He was on hand to talk about the possibilities offered by Paypal Galactic. "Trips to Mars, the moon, even orbit will require we provide astronauts and astro-tourists with as many comforts from home as possible, including how to pay each other," said Aldrin.
"Whether it's paying a bill, even helping a family member on Earth, we'll need access to money. I think humans will reach Mars, and I would like to see it happen in my lifetime. When that happens I won't be surprised if people use Paypal Galactic for the little things and the big ones."
Paypal is leading the project, and wants to bring people together to talk about how best to roll out an intergalactic currency that people can use to buy a newspaper on Mars.

Secret court lifts veil, slightly, on Google, Microsoft lawsuits
The most secretive court in the nation, which has been criticized for authorizing domestic surveillance by the National Security Agency, has taken a tiny step toward openness in lawsuits brought by Google and Microsoft.
CNET has learned that Reggie Walton, the presiding judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, told the Obama administration last week that -- barring any objections from the government -- he would take the unusual step of disclosing procedural information about the Internet companies' litigation.
The Department of Justice responded yesterday by saying it had no objections. Neither Google nor Microsoft's legal briefs "contain information that is now classified, nor information that should be held under seal," the department said in a response submitted by John Carlin, the acting assistant attorney general for national security.
Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor now staying in the transit area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airpot, has leaked a series of classified documents that outlined how the spy agency vacuums up Americans' confidential communications. The disclosures have roiled Washington officialdom and prompted a high-level diplomatic tussle over whether or not Russia will deport Snowden to face criminal charges under the Espionage Act.
Google, Apple, Yahoo, Microsoft, Facebook, and other Internet companies were left reeling after a pair of articles earlier this month, based on one of Snowden's disclosures, alleged that they provided the NSA with "direct access" to their servers through a so-called PRISM program.
By the next day, however, CNET reported that was incorrect, and the Washington Post backtracked from its original story on PRISM, eventually concluding there is no evidence that "the privacy of any American was illegally or improperly invaded." Google's filing before the surveillance court said the initial news coverage was "misleading," and Microsoft's lawyers called it "inaccurate."
The two companies, which have flatly denied providing any government agency with direct access to their servers, filed the lawsuits to try to clear their names. They say they respond to government requests for individual account data only when they're legally compelled to do so -- in cases ranging from kidnapping to missing persons to terrorist investigations -- and want permission to divulge more information publicly.
Microsoft says it received a combined total of "between 6,000 and 7,000" orders from federal, state, and local government agencies for "between 31,000 and 32,000 consumer accounts" during the six months that ended in December 2012. Facebook's total: up to 10,000 requests for up to 19,000 accounts. Apple's total: up to 5,000 requests for up to 10,000 accounts or devices. Yahoo disclosed receiving up to 13,000 requests, but did not say how many user accounts were swept in. Google has asked for permission to be far more specific.
Walton, the FISC's presiding judge, gave the Justice Department until July 9 to respond to the requests from Google and Microsoft to disclose summary statistics about orders received under Section 702 of the FISA Amendments Act, which became look in 2008. The pair of companies have until July 16 to submit their replies.
Section 702 requires that the government obtain the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court's approval of "targeting" and "minimization" procedures, and that the court review the agencies' certification describing how proposed surveillance techniques will comply with the law. Judges must consider whether the targeting procedures are "reasonably designed" to exclude Americans and purely domestic surveillance.
The Justice Department had the option of objecting to allowing this phase of the litigation to take place publicly by claiming either of the company's requests "contains classified information" or "information that is or should be sealed."
Walton defended the court last week against charges it allowed bulk surveillance by the NSA with limited oversight. In a statement to Reuters, he said: "The perception that the court is a rubber stamp is absolutely false. There is a rigorous review process of applications submitted by the executive branch, spearheaded initially by five judicial branch lawyers who are national security experts, and then by the judges, to ensure that the court's authorizations comport with what the applicable statutes authorize."

Watch Microsoft Unveil Windows 8.1 Preview Live Here
Microsoft is kicking off its Build developer conference today at 9am. The company has already announced that it will unveil Windows 8.1 in a Preview version during today’s event, but beyond that, we actually don’t know all that much about Microsoft’s plans for today’s keynote.
It’s a fair guess that Julie Larson-Green, who is now in charge of Microsoft’s Windows Division, will be there, but in the past, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has also regularly made appearances at Build (he does have a thing for developers, after all). We also expect to hear a bit more about the future of Windows RT and maybe see some new hardware, too.
The keynote is scheduled to start at 9am Pacific and we will embed the live video from Microsoft’s Channel 9 here once it becomes available.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Phablet Ditches the Stylus, Works with Pen or Pencil
The Sony Xperia Z has yet to hit the U.S., but there’s currently a larger, additional powerful smartphone around the way.
Now in the Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai, Sony introduced the Xperia Z Ultra. Made to get an entertainment and business device, the Android Jelly Bean 4.2-based phablet functions a 6.4-inch, total HD touchscreen and it is powered by Qualcomm’s most current Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor.

As businesses are wont to complete, Sony is throwing a bunch of superlatives with the smartphone. It is the “world’s slimmest complete HD smartphone,” has the “world’s biggest complete HD display” as well as “world’s quickest smartphone processor,” boasts Sony, but I usually disregard this kind of claims. That mentioned, there are actually a couple of items that makes this smartphone exciting.
Initial, you can use a pencil or a ballpoint pen (that has a tip above 1mm in diameter) to take notes or draw sketches right within the display. With other smartphones and tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Note II, you should use a capacitive stylus to accomplish precisely the same result.
What can make the Xperia Z Utlra’s display distinctive?
Sony advised me that the show has a exclusive style of coating (“Super Tricky Coat ASF” if you’re curious) that allows it to do the job with pencils and pens, and helps safeguard it from scratches as well as other marks. I’ve asked for more information about this feature but have nevertheless to hear back.
A single other matter to note regarding the Xperia Z Ultra’s 6.4-inch, one,920 by one,080 pixel show is that it borrows technologies found in Sony’s TVs called Triluminos. Without getting as well technical, Trimulinos makes use of a distinctive form of backlight technology to show truer colors and much more texture in comparison with standard LED backlighting, so you must appreciate richer, sharper images.
Graphics effectiveness should also obtain a boost, thanks to the inclusion of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 processor. Initially introduced at CES 2013, the quad-core chipset brings HD voice assistance for better contact top quality, sophisticated voice command activation and much more.
Other attributes of your Xperiz Z Ultra consist of an eight-megapixel camera on back, sixteen gigabytes of inner memory having a microSD expansion slot and 4G LTE assistance. Just like the Xperia Z smartphone and tablet, the phablet is water resistant in up to five feet of fresh water for as much as thirty minutes.
The Xperia Z Ultra is anticipated to launch globally in Q3, but no specifics have been announced today, which include U.S. availability - a market where Sony has struggled to create a identify for itself from the phone small business.
In addition to the Xperia Z Ultra, Sony also announced its next-generation Smartwatch now. You are able to find much more information about it in Lauren Goode’s report here.

New Samsung tablets mimic Galaxy phones
New Samsung tablets mimic Galaxy phones, go on sale in US July 7; 10-incher gets Intel chip
Samsung Electronics Co., the second-largest maker of tablets after Apple, is putting three new tablets within the Galaxy Tab 3 series on sale within the U.S. on July seven. The least expensive, $199 gadget will have a screen that measures 7 inches diagonally. An 8-inch model will go for $299 plus a 10-inch one particular for $399.
"Our aim will be to attract Galaxy smartphone users, and also to make it the greatest smartphone accessory," said Shoneel Kolhatkar, director of solution planning at Samsung Mobile.
The "Tab" line is Samsung's value brand, undercutting the value of comparable Apple models. Samsung's premium tablets are while in the "Note" line, which involve styluses.
The new tablets have the identical 3 buttons over the front since the Galaxy smartphones. Final year's Tab two had no bodily buttons to the front, as encouraged by Google, which supplies the Android software.
The 10-inch model is the first Android-powered Samsung tablet to work with an Intel processor. That is a substantial win for the Santa Clara, Calif., chipmaker, which has been seeking to break in to the marketplace for cellphone and tablet chips now that Computer revenue are slumping. Other smartphones and tablets run chips created by several different organizations, all based upon designs from ARM Holdings PLC, a British business.
Samsung had 18 % of your global tablet market place from the 1st quarter this 12 months, in accordance to exploration company IDC. Apple had 40 %. In smartphones, the figures are nearly reversed, with Samsung dominating, largely on account of its Galaxy line. Apple came in second using a 17 % market share for that iPhone.
Despite the fact that the tablets have bigger screens than Samsung's flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone, their screen resolution is lower. The 10-inch tablet features a resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels, compared with 1920 by 1080 for your cellphone. The smartphone packs in 3 times more detail within a square inch than the tablet does. Competitors Google and Apple have similarly-sized tablets with higher-resolution screens.

Samsung can fix the Facebook phone
Facebook's CEO reportedly
approached Samsung about creating the social network's next mobile phone. Wise move.
Keep in mind the very first Facebook phone, HTC's First? Not numerous do, even though it launched two months ago.
Remember the 1st Facebook cellphone, the HTC 1st? Not numerous do.
FORTUNE -- Don't forget the initial Facebook cell phone, the HTC 1st? Not quite a few do -- in spite of its current April launch.
The very first was Facebook's (FB) very first cell phone with Facebook Residence, customized software program that modifies places of Google's (GOOG) well-liked Android operating method so consumers can readily test standing updates and text friends. The mobile phone is additionally certainly one of Facebook's most significant stabs at mobile however. But stateside 1st product sales had been reportedly "a catastrophe," prompting HTC to ax the smartphone's U.K. release. Then AT&T (T), the phone's exclusive carrier, slashed pricing to $0.99 and has reportedly decided to discontinue product sales.
Now comes speculation that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg approached Samsung Mobile co-CEO Shin Jong-kyun about creating the up coming Facebook Residence smartphone during a current trip to Korea. "Facebook has every intention of becoming the second Google, and with that intent in mind, Zuckerberg is said to have asked Samsung to step up cooperation by launching a cell phone with a Facebook interface," a source told The Korea Herald.
Such stories should be taken with a grain of salt. But a Samsung smartphone with Facebook Household might not be a bad idea for either party. Income of Samsung's bestselling flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone have apparently slowed, causing some analysts to worry. "Samsung has still to prove its 'creative' innovation, that is, launching a product or a market segment that has not existed before in addition to prowess in manufacturing technology," the ratings agency Fitch Ratings recently told Reuters. Facebook Residence may be a single way for Samsung to diversify its lineup. (Extensions of the S4 line are already in the works.) In turn, Facebook could benefit from Samsung's vast market reach -- it accounted for nearly 31% of global smartphone revenue during the 1st quarter of 2013, according to Gartner Research.
MORE: Houses that flip and fold into place
Here are three ways Samsung could trump HTC's effort:
Make a worthy device. The HTC Very first wouldn't have been a cutting-edge cell phone late last year, let alone this year. Case in point: Facebook didn't even bother with hardware specifications during the April announcement, and now we know why. That 1.4 GHz dual-core processor, 1-gigabyte of RAM, and 4.3-inch display are ho-hum next to the Samsung S4, with its bright 5-inch full high-definition display and 1.9 GHz quad-core processor. (And let's not even touch the more gnarly 1.6 GHz eight-core international edition.) Obviously, stylish looks and advanced parts don't guarantee success in a market already inundated with Android smartphones, but they could help a Facebook Dwelling cell phone stand out more.
Make it multi-carrier. The HTC First's other achilles heel was its AT&T exclusivity. AT&T remains considered one of the top two U.S. mobile networks, but carrier availability is obviously key to growing a healthy user base. For now at least, it's clear very few Facebook users are willing to switch phones and carriers. So why not bring the cell phone to them? Having the device offered by Verizon (VZ) and even T-Mobile (TMUS) would go a long way toward upping Facebook Home's chances at taking off.
Make more than 1. Unless it's a new iPhone, a single device does not guarantee success. Samsung, which soared on the sheer, plastic backs of quite a few, numerous different smartphone models, could release multiple Facebook Home devices at different price points, with different screen sizes and hardware specifications, no sweat. After all, different folks prefer different screen sizes, though smartphone customers are generally trending larger now. There could be a go-to "flagship" device and a "phablet" version with a 5-plus inch screen, to start. Our point being, the more Samsung-made devices pre-loaded Facebook Property, the better.

Vinh is upset for the reason that he thinks the previous back button was " the ideal back button style of all time."The new one? Not so much.
Vinh explains within a blog site publish:
The pre-iOS seven back button consolidated these things right into a single button shape that tapers into an arrowhead on the left side, and it housed a text description of in which the button would lead you. It mainly did 3 jobs using a single element. 1st, it visually signaled the way back, so that even though you did not go through the descriptor text, you'd probably still understand the button’s function quickly. Second, for those who did study what it stated, it gave you the title of the prior see, without having forcing you to tap and hold or take some secondary action to reveal that facts. And eventually, not like the new back button in iOS seven, it was explicit about what you could tap and where; the target area was plainly demarcated through the button form, and managed to carry out so with out crowding the title of your see to its proper (by contrast iOS 7’s new back button text often looks to run proper in to the title with the screen)
Just as importantly, the previous back button was a visually pleasing layout. Its left side wasn’t just a regular, angular arrowhead - its angles had been ever so slightly sloped, softening the shape just sufficient to suggest that going back could be smooth and instantaneous.
The effect was tremendously stylish, within a extremely subtle way, and it grew to become a hallmark of iOS apps. No other operating system’s back buttons worked really precisely the same way, but even greater most iOS developers who customized the search of this button would protect its fundamental shape, dimension and perform. They may have modified up the color, swapped in a new typeface, or even altered the dimensionality of your button so that it had been flat or embossed, however they seldom strayed extremely far from the unique. I always liked to look closely at third celebration developers’ renderings of this button, to view if they replicated people gentle curves to the arrowhead. In my mind, the best made iOS apps always captured that tiny but significant detail.

Samsung analysts inquire difficult questions as S4 marketing charm wears off
SEOUL
(Reuters) - Analysts fell under Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's promoting spell whenever they made what they now admit have been hopelessly optimistic forecasts for its smartphone
revenue.
Samsung's large share in the high-end smartphone marketplace also persuaded some analysts to downplay market information pointing to a fast-saturating segment, a reality that may be currently consuming into revenue of Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) iPhone five.
Woori Investment & Securities , one of South Korea's largest securities firms, cut its outlook for Samsung's earnings and target share price on June 5. It was the first to adjust its view.
A massive wave of downgrades has since followed, with forecasters including JPMorgan (JPM.N), Morgan Stanley (MS.N) and Goldman Sachs taking a harder look at their assumptions of how well the S4, Samsung's latest Galaxy smartphone, would actually do.Income estimates for the S4 were slashed by as much as 30 percent, stirring investor concerns over Samsung's mobile devices division - the company's biggest profit generator.
Investors in the South Korean IT giant have paid dearly. Samsung lost nearly $20 billion in industry value in a week as shares plunged following the downgrades.
"I'd say most forecasters including myself had this conviction that they'll outperform again - because it's Samsung," said Byun Hanjoon, an analyst at KB Investment & Securities. "They had beaten expectations before, which led many to believe they are bound to excel again with the S4."
The S4 sold 10 million sets in just one month of its debut in late April, outperforming its predecessor, the S3.
Yet analysts now say the high-end smartphone segment is slowing, citing lacklustre prospects in Europe and South Korea in particular.
The S4, in reality, also lacks any real wow factor, they say.
"The Street, including Goldman Sachs, admittedly extrapolated the first-quarter earnings momentum through the year," Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Bang said in a report. "This resulted in very optimistic earnings expectations."
Most analysts have reduced their estimates for S4 shipments to around 7 million units a month from their previous average expectation of 10 million.
Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAC.N) has lowered its S4 income estimate for this year by five million to 65 million units.
Some analysts say a loss in potential revenue of 5 million S4 units would cut around $1 billion of Samsung's operating profit.
"S4 revenue are solid. It's just that some analysts had higher expectations and then they lowered them," J.K. Shin, head of Samsung's mobile devices division, told reporters last week.
Over the past month, 17 out of 43 analysts have downgraded their earnings estimates for Samsung, leading to a 0.6 percent drop in their average forecast for the company's April-to-June earnings to 10.4 trillion won, according to Thomson Reuters StarMine.
The lowered forecast, however, would still be a quarterly record.
Many analysts say weaker-than-expected S4 product sales will not necessarily stop Samsung from posting record quarterly profits. The company has diversified into many segments of the smartphone market place, Merrill Lynch says.
MID-TIER PHONES
Still, the scale in the downgrades has cast a shadow on Samsung's dominance in the $250 billion smartphone market.
Doing it no favour, Chinese rivals are aggressively growing their market share, aided by strong sales of mid-tier models - a section in which Samsung has relatively weak positioning, according to analysts.
The mid-tier segment accounted for less than 15 percent of Samsung's total shipments last year.
Analysts say Samsung has to focus on this lower tier in the medium term.
The high-end section is losing momentum, with manufacturers struggling to differentiate themselves and consumers calling for a leap in innovation, they say.
To be sure, Samsung has not sat idle.
It has gradually expanded its offerings. Among four varieties of your S4 introduced in recent weeks, there was one stripped-down version called the Galaxy Mini.
By comparison, Apple has had no new offerings since the iPhone 5 hit the market in September last year.
Samsung bulls are also pinning their hopes on product launches later this year including the Galaxy Note 3, a phone-tablet hybrid.
Some analysts say conservative forecasts will prevail.
"Expectations for innovation have been lowered, and I don't think there'll be as much buzz surrounding new product launches as it used to be," said Byun at KB.
Samsung's stock, which slumped to a six-month low on Thursday, inched up 0.9 percent on Friday.

Apple Should Press Delete On Phablets, iPad Maxis And Cheap Phones. Here's Why
The rumor mill all over Apple’s 2014 products slate is in overdrive, so what can we assume for being a near-truth? Do you second-guess by following the
rumors or do you probe the underlying method? Earlier Peter Cohan posted around the
chance of an Apple Phablet, but in fact there are various far more solutions being touted on the market. I think they are really primarily wrong and that Apple AAPL -0.33%‘s serious programs
are coming into focus.
The rumors are: Apple will introduce a less expensive mobile phone in September and so they will can be found in a multitude of colors and plastic casings - to distinguish them in the iPhone. Apple will have a look at a $99.00 value tag. Apple will introduce an outsized twelve inch plus iPad. Apple will go in to Phablets. Apple is arranging on tripling the pixel density on its displays.
Can Apple Compete With Samsung In $46 Billion Phablet Industry? Peter Cohan Peter Cohan Contributor
With Waze, Google Signals Arrival Of New Enterprise Model Haydn Shaughnessy Haydn Shaughnessy Contributor
The supplier intelligence that generates some of these rumors (reported by Reuters between other folks), also suggests that Apple normally throws down false scents for reporters and competitors by asking suppliers for all kinds of hardware prior to settling on a ultimate solution specification.
Put simply, supplier rumors aren’t really worth a whole lot. Nevertheless Tim Cook, in his recent D11 interview hinted that there's customer demand to get a larger display size.
Cook has also been insistent though that a larger screen calls for trade-offs like a larger battery, and the similar is true of the extra vibrant show. Anyway, what Apple needs is usually to strengthen the Retina as opposed to, necessarily, make it larger. The rumor mill suggests it could do that with quantum dot technologies from 3M or by means of Sharp IGZO back panels. But I like Cook’s insistence that these all involve trade-offs and Apple is wrestling with what tends to make most sense to its prospects.
What Apple owns right now is actually a stable platform that it truly is about to disrupt with a new iOS design. It pays to become cautious around the iOS7 launch. It will likely be a cautious 12 months with 1 key disruptive innovation.
When you examine Apple’s underlying strategy and its patenting record then people clear lines I pointed out earlier come into focus.
Why would Apple launch a considerably more cost-effective telephone? That does not make any sense. Even a short journey down market is going to existing Apple which has a considerably larger local community to support, a single that downloads more totally free apps and is unlikely to get looking for other Apple solutions. True they've had a superb working experience with the iPad Mini, which means you can’t rule out one more iProduct created across the 2007 paradigm. But the iOS 7 launch suggests Apple really wants to move on.
A larger show? I believe Apple is hamstrung on displays. Go for IGZO back panels - Samsung owns a part of Sharp and will know about it (there’s already a rumor that Samsung is preparing to launch the first IGZO tablet, for no superior explanation than to get to start with). Go for PHOLEDs and so they need to have to negotiate with Samsung, who dominate OLED production. Go for quantum dot and Samsung is an investor in among the critical gamers. Apple has to do some major innovation in displays to avoid getting hog-tied by its rivals.
Apple continues to be occupied patenting flex-display technologies - you can select up on that thread here at Patently Apple.
In their patent filings Apple suggest their upcoming move is likely to be a comformable display - something that wraps throughout the wrist or which has other conforming characteristics (probably a display that is definitely visible from quite a few angles). Their patent filings also suggest that they are gearing up for any launch into monitoring and metrics within a major way perhaps incorporating the iWatch.
Yesterday I referenced a patent filing that covers the tracking of all kinds of physique motion. Apple looks like it can be set to move into wellness in a greater way, working with physique sensors, perhaps within the wrist but potentially even developed into sports activities apparel. It wouldn’t be the first time - Apple pioneered it in the sports activities shoe but has let the marketplace get ahead of it to date.
The two of people developments propose Apple may be far more considering deepening its relationship with its huge buyer base instead of extending it down into marketplace categories that can't afford to travel with it into new services.
The concept of the substantially more serious try to generate wearables productive is tempting also as a result of Google GOOG +0.51%‘s action. And here I believe we see Apple’s long-term strategy at operate.

The supplier intelligence that generates some of these rumors (reported by Reuters between other folks), also suggests that Apple normally throws down false scents for reporters and competitors by asking suppliers for all kinds of hardware prior to settling on a ultimate solution specification.

Google Gets a Key Partner in Challenging Microsoft Office
Thus far, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT ) has primarily downplayed the disruptive risk that Google (NASDAQ: GOOG ) Apps represents for its
rewarding Office business. To be clear, Workplace is Microsoft's most significant cash cow, followed by Windows and servers. The business enterprise segment very easily created essentially the most working cash flow last quarter at $4.1 billion.
You'd assume Microsoft would take any threat to that company fairly seriously, however the business just isn't going to see Google being a major contender. Microsoft small business division exec Julia White informed The new York Times late last yr that Google has not "yet shown they're definitely major," saying they're even now just an "advertising organization." That may just be a public facade even though, as Microsoft has reportedly create a "Google Compete" group especially to defend Workplace.
Either way, Google just received really serious.
Pondering inside the box
As even more proof that Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ ) is sick of Wintel, the Pc giant has just partnered with Significant G to launch a brand new productivity giving geared toward smaller and medium corporations, or SMB. The package deal is named HP SMB IT in the Box, and HP is positioning it as being a "one-stop shop" targeting the SMB section.
HP SMB IT in a Box will notably incorporate Google Apps for Small business as being a cloud-based productivity suite as a substitute of Workplace, which promises to make value savings. In excess of five million companies are now tapping the search giant's much less expensive alternative. HP will offer the requisite hardware, which include PCs and printers.
HP stays the No. one Computer vendor within the globe, grabbing 15.7% on the market place during the 1st quarter, and it is expecting a boost in income upcoming 12 months when Microsoft stops supporting Windows XP. HP is actually a big spouse to score for that Google Apps Reseller plan.
Will not worry Apple
Even Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) is finding into cloud-based productivity computer software, not too long ago announcing iWork for iCloud at WWDC this week. For the duration of the demonstration, Apple kept pointing out that almost everything was taking place in the browser. The Mac maker manufactured absolutely sure to level out that the new giving, which will launch in beta this fall, will assistance all of Office's widespread formats.
Microsoft does not should get worried as a great deal about Apple right here, though, because Apple almost hardly ever targets the enterprise directly. Apple has often gone right after the mainstream shopper, and significantly of its recent enterprise momentum is due to the BYOD movement. Likewise, iWork for iCloud appears positioned toward meeting buyer productivity requirements.
iWork for iCloud is additionally very well behind Google Apps and Workplace 365 with regards to options, and it has not even hit the marketplace nevertheless. It will not be a big player during the enterprise.
Fear Google
The news will be the latest within a string of collaborations concerning HP and Google. Thus far this yr, HP has launched its initial Chromebook, initial Android tablet, and announced an Android laptop. Soon after hedging its bets with these gadgets, HP is even further diversifying far from Microsoft as element of its new multiplatform tactic.
The SMB segment is ripe for Google to target, as people organizations are usually extra cost delicate than corporations in the Fortune 500. As Google continues to construct up Google Apps, traders can count on the organization to move up-market later on on. Watch out, Microsoft.
